After a couple of hours chasing balloons, Hagar heads to the dining pavilion, which has been stocked with a smorgasbord of tender and carefully prepared victuals. While the faithful eat, drink and make merry, Hagar plies them with stories of his travels, rewards the winners of the distance race and then gives his famous Annual Hagar Awards. No one gets by, I mean goes without acknowledgment. The worst crew gets a plaque, in public, no less. The oldest sailor get one, too. And sometimes the most meritorious get an award, too. With the assemblage’s help, the best cook gets a plaque. The number of awards, always dozens at the start, decreases with the sun’s angle above the western horizon.
