The Alter Cup’s format is geared to reduce and eliminate variables that give an advantage of any competing team. Each year, all the catamarans raced are the same. In 2007, the Blade catamaran, a formula 16 catamaran was the selected boat. There are 20 teams in the regatta and with 10 catamarans, only half the teams are on the water in any race. The initial assignment to A or B fleet is determined by random drawing. Boat assignment is also random and changes for each race. After the first pair of races, A fleet consists of the faster sailors; B fleet is for the less fortunate. Sailors move back and forth between A and B fleet because the top 3 finishers in B fleet move to A fleet in the next competition, replacing the final 3 finishers in the A fleet, who move to B fleet. Because a given team does not use the same catamaran more than once (except by chance), and they may be in either fleet, it made recognizing a favorite team from a distance impossible. The only way to know who was who was personal recognition or checking boat assignments prior to going on the water. In the end, this randomization has the goal of giving each team a chance to score based on primarily on skill, with a little luck both good and bad, thrown in to spice things up.
