The Portsmouth low fleet included 5 teams. And these 5 teams got in 5 races on Saturday afternoon. Frank Rodericks, racing his Frankenboat, No Fear, a highly modified NACRA 5.2, finished 1st, with mostly a string of 1st place scores. Mark Baker & Ranier Binding on a NACRA 5.5 finished 2nd. But not without some serious competition from John Fondrk & Dennis Bedgood, racing a NACRA 6.0. Dave Ellis, racing on a Hobie 20 with Eddie Young on Saturday and Garrett Eriksen on Sunday scored in 4th place. Richard Rayburn & Jeff Herter raced a full blown Hobie 21 to 6th place. This was an impressive fleet to watch. These are inherently fast boat all sailed by experienced sailors. They were on the long course, moving fast.
The Wildcat is one of the most laid back of the summer regattas, occurring at the end of the summer. It attracts mostly central Florida sailors–apparently those sufficiently familiar with Florida’s secondary highways to find a place that is about 30 miles from the nearest limited access expressway. It is also one of the few remaining lake regattas in Florida, complete with wind shifts and unexplained wind speed changes. The Lake Eustis Sailing Association has been steadily improving its facilities, now boasting a new club house that was not present when the 1st Wildcat occurred several years ago. I should note that camping occurs on the Sailing Association’s property, and hotel rates are the lowest of any regatta covered on Florida Multihull Sailor. This is certainly one of the most accessible regattas and should be more heavily attended. It’s worth anticipating next year’s event.
